The vitality of the arts in America depends in large part on financial support from the public sector. The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra in particular depends on grants from federal, state, county and city agencies in order to close the gap between total expenses and the revenues generated by ticket sales, concerts, and other revenue.

If you believe in the importance of the arts in our community, take pen to paper and tell your elected officials how you feel. The best letters are the ones that are the most personal, but to assist you in getting started here are some of the RSO's and orchestra industry's most pressing issues.

Tell your elected Federal officials to:

  • Support increased funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (www.nea.gov). After several years of funding reductions, the National Endowment for the Arts has seen moderate increases, but additional funding would maintain several core programs and address key needs in the nation's arts infrastructure.
  • Support the restoration of arts education in our public schools, especially through funding and reauthorization for the Elementary and Secondary Act.
